about

Eaten By Dog’s second album Anxiety Ain’t No Currency sounds like something Nietzsche and Brian Eno might have come up with if they tried to make a country record. The band aren't interested in cowboy hats or Nashville, these guys seem more interested in the idea that while the world is well and truly in the midst of the 6th mass extinction, most of our true anxieties arise just after we post something online. That everybody is connected only by an overwhelming sense of disconnect. Yee Ha.

When you listen to Anxiety Aint No Currency don't expect a collection of ‘sad country songs’ - Chris Lichti has written a collection of bleak country songs. Even when the tunes get upbeat there’s still a hint of Prozac taking the edge off every note for your convenience. Featuring members of Graveyard Train and Cash Savage’s The Last Drinks, the players in this band prefer to slow things down and paint dark musical imagery rather than musically showing-off or nailing country licks. Take the opening track, Only You, it’s a soundscape that would be much more at home on a post-rock record than any Merle Haggard album. Like most of the songs on the album, its statement is understatement. Lyrically, Rain Won’t Come is almost a country love song, but Chris Lichti fills the thing with such an ominous sense of depression and helplessness that it’s more of a ‘Steve Bannon and Donald Trump slow-dancing under a mirror ball’ sort of love.

Melbourne is home to some of the world’s best alt-country bands - and that’s probably because the best of them are never content with just playing country music. Despite Eaten By Dogs being nominated for Best Country Album in the Age Music Awards (2014), or being coined ‘the latest Australian ambassadors of honest alternative country music’ by Tone Deaf, it seems that with this second album the band’s discontent with making ‘country music’ has only grown. Drawing their musical inspiration from post-rock, post-modernism, anxiety and oppression as much as alt-country music, Eaten By Dogs are doing their best to outgrow the pigeon-hole. Produced and engineered by Sam Lowe, Eaten By Dogs recorded Anxiety Ain’t No Currency in Aviary studios and is emblematic only of their home town’s incredible Melbourne scene.

In the 4 years since the release of their self-titled debut album the world has rapidly begun to disintegrate and these guys are attempting to provide a soundtrack to it. Anxiety Ain’t No Currency is a record of our times: music to listen to as you steer your way through the escapism of modern life.
